OSHA (29 CFR 1910.120(q) and 1926.59(q)) requires that employees performing chemical emergency response must receive training commensurate with their duties. Hazardous materials technicians (and specialists) are the people on the HAZWOPER emergency response team who are allowed to enter the release zone to actively attempt to contain and control the release. Their role is described more fully in the section on Emergency Response Team Organization.

Trainees in this course will actually don and doff the type of Level A equipment used for protection during responses to releases of especially hazardous chemicals, as well as receiving training on all aspects of the response and their role in the overall incident management system.
